Without strong reading skills, it is difficult for people to hold jobs and become productive members of society. To improve our economy, it is imperative that the United States push its citizens to become more literate.  I believe this is what provides support for the author's claim first because it includes what will happen if we do not know how to read, our jobs will be in jeopardy. you obviously need to know how to read because the fact that if you can't read you won't know how to write and you will need to sign your name on the check you need to deposit or cash, if not you cannot have the money you earned. Also you won't know what job you are taking in. so  Without strong reading skills, it is difficult for people to hold jobs and become productive members of society.
