Hello there! The colonies established a weak central government under the Articles of Confederation in order to prevent one single entity from controlling too much power. The colonists had just finished fighting a very expensive and bloody war for independence from the tyrannical British which possessed a strong centralized government overseas in England. The colonists did not want to trade one tyrannical overlord for another. This however backfired on them severely as they were not able to tax the colonies, establish a standing army/navy, or form a universal form of currency. This led them to later create a stronger document, The United States Constitution.
