I am not <em>entirely</em> sure, but I would guess that in the passage the word with a negative connatatve meaning would be life. While life typically has a positive denotative meaning, in this instance it takes on a negative connative meaning  because it is how long Douglass will be a slave. A life sentence is not positive when you are trapped.
