What would happen if one of the chromosomes in a homologous pair failed to separate from its homologue at the end of metaphase I
Zepler [3.9K]

The correct answer is: daughter cells will have abnormal chromosome numbers and this condition is called aneuploidy.

Nondisjunction is the failure of homologous chromosomes (or sister chromatids) to separate during the process of cell division and consequently lead to aneuploidy. There are three forms of nondisjunction:

• Nondisjunction in meiosis I (pair of homologous chromosomes unable to separate in meiosis I),

• Nondisjunction in meiosis I (sister chromatids unable to separate during meiosis II), and

•  Nondisjunction in mitosis (failure of sister chromatids to separate during mitosis)

Read each of the sentences that describe what happens either during mitosis or meiosis. Drag each sentence into the correct box.
kiruha [24]

Answer:

MEIOSIS:

- Each replicated chromosome pairs with its corresponding homologous chromosome

- Tetrads form and crossing over sometimes occur

- Paired homologous chromosome line up across the center of the cell.

- Four haploid daughter cells form that are not identical to the parent cell

MITOSIS:

- Homologous chromosomes do not pair

- One row of chromosomes line up at the center of the cell.

- The cell nucleus divides only once

- Two diploid daughter cells form that are identical to the parent cell.

Explanation:

Mitosis and Meiosis are the two cellular divisions that occur in living organisms. Mitosis is the kind of cell division that produces two diploid daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell while Meiosis produces four haploid daughter cells (gametes) that are genetically different from the parent cell.

Based on the general description of the two cell divisions above, the following events take place in them respectively:

1) MEIOSIS:

- Each replicated chromosome pairs with its corresponding homologous chromosome (similar but non-identical chromosome from each parent).

- Tetrads form and crossing over sometimes occur. Tetrads are the structures that form when two homologous chromosomes pair while crossing over is the exchange of chromosome segment between two non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes. These two only occur during meiosis.

- Paired homologous chromosome line up across the center of the cell during metaphase I of meiosis.

- Four haploid daughter cells form that are not identical to the parent cell. Note that meiosis reduces the chromosomal number of the parent cell by half.

2) MITOSIS:

- Homologous chromosomes do not pair during mitosis.

- One row of replicated chromosomes (sister chromatids) line up at the center of the cell during metaphase.

- The cell nucleus divides only once in mitosis as opposed to twice during meiosis.

- Two diploid daughter cells form that are identical to the parent cell. Note that mitosis retains the chromosomal number of the parent cell.

A food company has designed new types of breakfast cereal and is now working to decide which cereal to mass produce and begin se
Rus_ich [418]

The food company’s questions are best answered by a combination of survey and scientific tools. To answer questions such as ‘which cereal's box is the best color?’ and ‘which cereal tastes the best to every eater?’ as well as ‘which cereal would sell the most boxes?’, the food company would need to conduct a survey to a group of people which resembles their target group most. The result would help them in answering those questions.

However, to answer ‘Which cereal contains the most sugar?’, the food company would need to use scientific tools to measure to sugar content in the cereal. This is the answer.

svetoff [14.1K]

Answer:

B. Old world monkeys

Explanation:

The Old World monkeys (including baboons) inhabit Africa and Asia, and are more closely related to apes. They are generally larger than New World monkeys, have more elongated faces, and have a tail that is not "prehensile".
