The different republics that formerly constituted Yugoslavia (he SR Bosnia and Herzegovina, SR Croatia, SR Macedonia, SR Montenegro, SR Serbia and SR Slovenia), declared their independence, even tough there still existed internal ethnic tensions on each.
- Iraq: ethnic conflicts due to the divisions between the Sunni and Shi'ite factions in Iraq. Concerns emerged with the arrival of Sadam Hussein to power. The conflict stills ongoing nowadays.
