I believe the answer is bacteria, because the question states ". . . taking a <u><em>torn </em></u>package of dry pasta from the food storage area" The word torn makes me infer, that since the package was not sealed, and protected from anything that could have entered it such as bacteria, despite washing her hands and preventing it from her own germs, she still failed in making a clean pasta dish because of the torn package that could've been open for many days and the pasta, if possible could have also gotten stale.
