Harding was the conciliation candidate in the 1920 presidential election, promising the nation's return to "normalcy" in the form of a strong economy, independent of outside influence. He and the Republican Party wanted to distance themselves from the progressivism that dominated the early twentieth century. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, their running mate, defeated James M. Cox and Franklin D. Roosevelt in the largest margin of victory in popular vote since there are records of the polls.
