The communal toilets in ancient Rome were located in full view of the public. The toilets were accessible to passersby. They were situated in a room with a round hole carved onto a stone or wooden seat. There was water flowing underneath the toilet.
After using the latrine, users cleaned up with a stick which had a sponge attached to it. Private residences also had toilets that were located close to the kitchen.
