Essentially every power-hungry country wanted to expand their borders, as well as their power (of course), so, they decided the best way to do so was through imperialism.
Many countries that sought power in the form of imperialist policies, had advanced military technology. With an advanced military, they were able to establish dominance over the region they were attempting to seize.
