Imperialism means to expand a county's power by political or military means, and the big stick proverb means that one should be non aggressive but hold the power to be violent, just like 'an iron fist under a velvet glove'. Imperialistic America after the spanish american war, america annexed the Philippines because imperialists believed it would be an ideal port and military base. Puerto Rico was also made an american territory, and though Cuba was 'free' its government was still basically controlled by America. These were all expansions made to make America larger and more powerful even though imperialism led to consistent involvement in foreign affairs.
