</span>Daoism<span> isn't really a government influence... it embraces the philosophy of yin and yang. Good and Bad, without one the other cannot exist. Natural influences of a good and bad government doesn't really make a good governing philosophy. Confucianism was really based on good and virtuous, people live life in harmony and proprietary. He's missing the rules and laws of the Legalist system of government. Where it assumes all people are bad and without laws and rules everything would be in chaos. The First Emperor established the Legalist system in China, he was said to have buried alive hundreds of Confucian scholars and burned Confucian books... His reign was short lived, only 14 years. The next dynasty... the Han, governed with a combination of Legalist and Confucian type of government, lasted 426 years. This pretty much continued till the Tang dynasty when Buddhism a larger influence in society.</span><span />
Prohibition is the era in American history when the sale, disruption, and manufacturing of alcohol was illegal. Since selling alcohol was illegal, anyone that wanted to get alcohol was now breaking the law. However whenever there is a good/resource people want, even if it is illegal, they will pay a significant amount of money for it.
When this is the case, people will risk almost anything to make a huge profit. This is why crime and violence increase during Prohibition. Organized crime rings, lead by people like Al Capone, start to form. Due to the high demand of alcohol by American citizens, there became a huge competition between different organized crime groups for customers. Rival gangs would end up in shootouts (like the Valentine's Day Massacre).
Lincoln hoped to use a well-known figure of speech to help rouse the people to recognition of the magnitude of the ongoing debates over the legality of slavery. His use of this paraphrased metaphor is perhaps clearer when you look at some more of his speech:
"A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe the government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. As you can see, in this metaphor, the "house" refers to the Union — to the United States of America — and that house was divided between the opponents and advocates of slavery. Lincoln felt that the ideals of freedom for all and the institution of slavery could not coexist — morally, socially, or legally — under one nation. Slavery must ultimately be universally accepted or universally denied.
