Adams attempted to deal with the situation by calling for an embargo on French products and closing American Ports to the French.  Adams also encouraged the building an American Navy but men such as Jefferson fought against such a notion.  Jefferson was enamored of the French and felt that America ought to enter into an alliance with them in all ways!!
