Answer:

I dont think they were suprised because power has a way of controling people but they have to let it control them they found the oppertunity to be above the others and so they took they knew exactly what they were doing  they thought it was all fun and games because in the end it was not them getting hurt I personally think they only said that to keep a clean image because while power is a stong conductor you hae to let it take control and these people gave in very easily
