Among its many principles, humanism promoted the idea that man was the center of his own universe, and people should embrace human achievements in education, classical arts, literature and science.

One of the most famous phrases that comes from the document, and enshrines the basis of all human rights documents is: <span> "all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". </span><span>
</span><span>The Declaration of Independence was drawn up by Thomas Jefferson during the time where there were gross violations of human rights being committed in the South of America, especially with regards to the treatment of the African American slaves.</span>
