The cotton gin actually had the opposite effect that Eli Whitney was expecting in the long term. The cotton gin was created to ease the burden of needing slaves in large proportions, as it quickly and efficiently removed the seed away from the cotton itself. However, the cotton gin actually made it so that owners actually imported more bondservants in an effort to maximize profits.

The southern economy, therefore, became even more dependent on slaves, and were even more heavily reliant on slavery and the cotton industry.
