One other reason would have to be the spread of Catholicism which was Christianity but, later changed because of the Romans. Total war refers to the war in which the entire resources available are induced in the war. The civilians and the infrastructure are all subjected to the need to the war. The two World Wars, World War I and World War II are termed to be the Total War because of this reason. The industrial, financial, labor  and manual resources were mobilized and used in the wars. Any civilian or any infrastructure or resource related to the civilians also would become a part of the war. Huge loss of life and property were also a part of the Wars. The loss of life was not just limited to the military force, but also of the people who were not directly associated with the war.
