Thomas Paine, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America was against the control of America by Britain. According to him, nature made it such that Kingdoms should control Islands but in the relationship between America and Britain, the reverse was the case.

He rejected Britain's control of America, comparing them to the Islands that wished to control a whole continent like America. Paine believed that Britain belonged to Europe, while America should be left alone to govern its affairs.
