What is falling action in a story?

English

Falling action occurs right after the climax, when the main problem of the story resolves. It is one of the elements of the plot of the story, the other elements being exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution. Falling action wraps up the narrative, resolves its loose ends, and leads toward the closure.

Falling action happens right after the climax when the major problem of the story is resolved. Falling action concludes the narrative, completes its loose ends and leads to closure.

EXPLANATION:

The falling action happens after the climax and is the opposite of the rising action. Instead of a set of events that raise the intensity, a falling action is a set of events that follow the main conflict and indicate a fall, good or bad. The falling action is the connective network between climax and resolution, showing how the main moment to the storyline ends.

Generally, falling action shows the results of the climax. The story will lead in a dissimilar direction as a direct consequence of the decisions made during the climax. Therefore, the falling action illustrates how those decisions influence the character going forward.

Falling action will usually reduce tension dramatically after the moment of climax. This does not mean that it has no dramatic conflict or tension, only that it is directed in a different direction. The momentum of the story no longer moves quickly to the moment of confrontation but moves towards conclusions. New difficulties are less likely to be presented, at least not complications that will increase stakes or alter the direction of the story; by the time the plot goes to the falling action, the ending follows.

What does the irony at the end reveal to the reader in the story The Necklace?
Alex73 [517]
Maupassant also uses irony, which is when what you expect to happen is the opposite of what actually happens, and this is the driving force behind the surprise ending. It's ironic that the necklace is fake because Mathilde and her husband went into such debt to replace it.
