The French culture influenced American fashion in many ways. In France it used to be very common to wear berets. As an artist or not (not being stereotypical), the US has used that idea of a simple hat to show high fashion statements shown in Saint Laurent and many other high end fashion companies. This is how France influenced US fashion.
