As Mark Twain, Samuel Langhorne Clemens was an American author, humorist, publisher, lecturer, and businessman. William Faulkner referred to him as "the founder of American literature" and praised him as the "best humorist the United States has produced." He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the latter of which has been dubbed the "Great American Novel" numerous times.

The setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn was Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain was born and raised. He worked as a typesetter and wrote articles to his older brother Orion Clemens' newspaper after completing an apprenticeship to become a printer.
