The right answer is "D.The number of lives lost was over twenty million."

The Taiping Rebellion (1851-1864) was one of the bloodiest conflicts in history, a confrontation between Imperial Chinese forces and a group inspired by a self-proclaimed mystic named Hong Xiuquan (or Hung Hsiu-ch'uan) (1813-1864) ), who claimed to be a Christian and also called himself the brother of Jesus Christ. His aim was to create a new culture, replacing the Confucian and Buddhist tradition with something "new" - shaped according to his ideas.

It is estimated that between 30 and 50 million people died as a direct consequence of the conflict. Moreover, in the period between 1850 and 1873, China's population was reduced by more than 60 million people as a result of rebellions, wars, drought and famine.
