In order to get better at using a skill, one needs to practice that skill. When a person is good at a skill, they will be more confident in using it because they will be less likely to be mess up when using said skill and get embarrassed.

This is the same with grade-level words in reading, speaking and writing. Using them more will enable the user to acquire more confidence in them because they will be better at using them.
