Even during the time of colonization, the British looked to expand in the West, beyond the territories they had claimed. After gaining independence from Britain, Americans continued to look west, past the frontier for new land and a route to the Pacific Ocean. The idea of Manifest Destiny was used to justify American expansion all the way to the Pacific.
