Why is the term “Latin” used to describe the region that is to be studied in this Unit? The natives spoke a form of Latin taught

to them by ancient Roman explorers. “Latin” is a word describing people from the Iberian Peninsula in Europe. Most of the widely spoken languages in this region are derived from Latin South America reminded early explorers of the Italian region where the Romans lived.
