An idiom is a word or phrase which means something different from its literal meaning.

Explanation:

Examples:

It can not literally rain cats and dogs, we are using this idiom to say that it is raining really hard.

Someone having "cold feet"

This does not mean they have to put on socks, but rather that they are nervous about something.
