World War 1 was the biggest event for early modernist writers who didn't want to support the tradition that led to the war. They wanted to reinvent art. The novels The Maze Runner and The 5th Wave both have the theme of survival. They both surround(focus on) a select group of kids that have leaders with big decisions to make. The Maze runner has to escape a "prison/test" to survive. In the 5th Wave the characters are trying to survive what they think is an alien invasion. Its set in a more apocalyptic setting.
