So a "thesis statement" means you want to get the main idea in one sentence. Just a simple, quick, and small summary. The thesis statement is at the beginning of a summary or essay.

You also want to engage the reader, so they don't think "this is boring," or "I think this is out of my style". It may also be called a hook, snagging the readers attention.

Long story short, it is the first two.
