In Chapter 3, we see Nick being invited to a party thrown by his neighbor Jay Gatsby. Not only was he one of the few to be actually invited, but a chauffer-driven car also came to pick him up. People were not invited—they went there." </em>This seems to suggest a certain level of importance he might have been for Gatsby.
