Explanation:

When the Patriot army of 12,000 marched into Valley Forge in the winter of 1777, they did so in low spirits for they had been forced out of the Continental capital of Philadelphia by the British.

Washington did not let this affect him too much however and in the winter that followed the Americans did all they could to survive and come out stronger.

Before this winter, the American forces had been disunited because they were trained by different instructions. With the arrival of the Prussian army officer,  Baron von Steuben, he along with Washington were able to train the soldiers in modern warfare tactics that saw the continental army that went into Valley Forge come out a well trained and disciplined army.
