Temperature is the term used to describe the average kinetic energy of the molecules in a shape. Temperature is used because it is difficult to measure the speed of an individual gas molecule. Kinetic energy is proportional to the speed of the molecules. As the speed of the colliding molecules increases, the total kinetic energy of all the gas molecules also increases. The gas molecules gain energy and move faster and the temperature also goes up.
