The mountainous geography of Greece functioned as natural borders between different settlements. The early Greeks settled in the habitable land between the mountains, which later led to large city-states developing in those areas between the mountains. In 1849 a state constitution was written, a governed and legislature chosen and CA became a state in 1850 as part of the Compromise of 1850.
