Constructing the Panama Canal was extremely hard. Besides the colossal task of cutting through a mountain and digging a 9-mile ditch, there was malaria and yellow fever. They had to drain swamps so that mosquitoes could not breed and transportation was very hard and slow. There was a lot of rain and since the ground there is not solid rock it made mud and clay got soft so mudslides were common.
