What was Saint Augustine's theory on monsters?

From what I've learned from the subject, this was named the St. Augustine monster and the scientists kept looking into it after two boys found a giant blob pretty much on the beach. They don't know exactly what it was but they think it was part of a huge mutilated octopus.
