So basically I'm thinking that a good focus technique for them to try in order to create the desired effect, would be measured breathing while thinking of the end goal. If they're trying to portray dread and gloominess, Breathing slowly while thinking about the role they're about to take on.

Does this help? Is that the kind of focusing technique you're looking for? I don't know, I did a little bit of googling but all I could find was deep breath and psyche therapy.
