In religious studies, an ethnic religion is a religion or belief associated with a particular ethnic group. Ethnic religions are often distinguished from universal, multiracial religions which are not limited in ethnic, national or racial scope, such as Christianity, Hinduism and Islam.

The colonists did not like this, because the colonies were more independent than they are now and they did not want the big, centralized government to decide how they were able to trade and who they were able to trade with. They also wanted to broaden their trade, to not only do commercial trade, but bigger trade.
