The speaker implies that be being American, she has lost some of the traits (adjectives) that have followed her family - like one of her grandma's traits were 'lonesome for her other life' and the aunt was 'bitter'.

The key here is to analyze the final sentences, she said that those traits filled her in childhood as well as opportunity. Nevertheless, after she grew up she became American and some of them let her because by being American and smooth they found that they didn't belong here as a cause of being Americanly smooth.
