In 1864, Elias Howe invented the first sewing machine. Howe had tried to make a machine that mimicked his wife’s hand movements while stitching, but failed. He then explored other techniques to make stitches and invented a machine that could make around 250 lock stitches in a minute. These stitches were much stronger than the hand stitches. However, after he patented his machine and put it on the market, no one was interested in buying, or even renting, the machine.
