When the Census Bureau presents the personal distribution of income, it splits the households into quintiles or fifths.
The Census Bureau is a governmental agency saddled with the responsibility of providing data (information) about the people living in a country at a particular period of time.
In measuring the personal distribution of income, the Census Bureau split the various households by income, typically from lowest to highest, and then the households are divided into five (5) groups having an equal number of people, this is simply referred to as quintiles or fifths. This income distribution in the five groups is then compared to the total. Thus, each group comprises of one-fifth ( ) of the total number of households.
Hence, the first quintile of the households, usually has the lowest income while the fifth quintile has the highest.
