Macbeth's degradation obeys two important factors. Ambition being the most significant of the tragic hero's flaws forces him to do what is needed to do to fulfill the fate that the three witches have indicated. The thirst for power makes him lead a life of corruption. However, in the course of the play we are also able to see a hesitant honorable man who doubts whether killing Duncan. This internal conflict is mitigated by the encouragement of his no less ambitious wife, Lady Macbeth. But for her intervention, Macbeth might not have been able to take action.
