Icons played a vital role in the division between Rome and Constantinople. The Western Church accepted Icons of Mary, Crucifixes, and saints. The Eastern Church forbid religious images. Images cause disagreement among the people on both sides because of their different beliefs. Pope Leo IX went to Constantinople to solve the conflict of religion with its different customs. Upon meeting the Patriarch, both did not agree and excommunicated each other which officially split the Catholic Church from the Eastern Church.
