California is a free state, Fugitive slave act.  

Explanation:

Fugitive slave act: even if slaves made it to a free state in the north they were forced back to the south by slave catchers. This also caused northers to see first hand how badly slaves were treated.

California: West ward expansion was also at this time, and expanding slaves was a big argument between the south and north; so having cali. be a free state was a big win for the north. North knew they couldnt completely stop slavery so they went down the path of trying to stop it from expanding instead.

In the stories, notice how all the girls wanted to be popular. They wanted to be known for who they were and not how they looked. Basically, they didn't want to be discriminated for how they looked or talked. So, this impacted society greatly because they were making a change on how people saw them.
