In 1981, around 13,000 air traffic controllers walked out as a strike after talks with the Federal Aviation Administration collapsed. This strike inconvenienced many as 7,000 flights were canceled on that very day. President Reagan branded the strike illegal and mandated that employees report back to work within 48 hours or be relieved from duty. On August 5, 1981, he fired more than 11,000 air traffic controllers.
