Answer: Layout and Transportation: When industrialization began, cities started to become large sites for manufacturing. There was also an increase in trade and finance. This created a need for mass transit and a subgroup: the suburbs. The suburbs were almost like an escape from the pollution and growing dangers of the city. The city was seen as location for the working class, so to the middle class it became dangerous which created the need for the suburb sub category. Since people were moving further from the city they needed better transportation, which lead to the use of the electric trolley. In the city there was several plots of land available, but they were small so people began building upward, this was the beginning of the skyscraper.
Ethnic Diversity: Cities were known as the best place for the hard workers, the working class ran the city. This meant that the best place for an immigrant to live would be the city, there was cheap (not very livable) housing, and financial opportunities. Germans, Italians, Irish, and Swedes started migrating to large US cities, many of them housed together as they were experiencing the same new experiences. There was also an increase in black newcomers, this would result in riots from white individuals. Cities like New York and Atlanta were known to have the largest race riots in resentment.
Entertainment and Culture: A huge source of entertainment began in the city during this time. Amusement parks were becoming extremely popular especially in New York and Los Angeles. People would listen to music, watch skits, and witness magic shows. There was also an increase in Ragtime, which would also start an urban dance craze. There was an increase in dating, that also created a larger number of young single adults. People were also slowly starting to be more open to their sexuality, although the majority still resented anyone who was not heterosexual.
