3. Impressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, Neo-Impressionism, Divisionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Art Deco and Abstract art movements evolved in Paris.

4. The Musée d'Orsay in Paris is home to some of the greatest works of French and European art produced in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

5. From the Renaissance on, classicism dominated Western art, with classical mythology consisting of the various myths and legends of the ancient Greek and Roman gods and heroes becoming a major source of subject matter for history painting.

6. The Impressionist painters used layers of colours, leaving gaps in the top layers to reveal the colours underneath. The technique is achieved through hatching, cross-hatching, stippling, drybrushing, and sgraffito (scratching into the paint)

7. Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (The Luncheon on the Grass) originally titled Le Bain (The Bath) – is a large oil on canvas painting by Édouard Manet created in 1862 and 1863. It depicts a naked women and a scantily dressed female bather on a picnic with two fully dressed men in a rural setting. Rejected by the Salon jury of 1863, Manet seized the opportunity to exhibit this and two other paintings in the 1863 Salon des Refusés, where the painting sparked public notoriety and controversy. The work is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. A smaller, earlier version can be seen at the Courtauld Gallery, London.

8. The term 'impressionism' comes from a painting by Claude Monet, which he showed in an exhibition with the name Impression, soleil levant ("Impression, Sunrise"). An art critic called Louis Leroy saw the exhibition and wrote a review in which he said that all the paintings were just "impressions".

9.  Post-Impressionism is a term used to describe the reaction in the 1880s against Impressionism. It was led by Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and Georges Seurat.

12. When he painted this harlequin in 1923, Picasso was already an art world superstar. Since the armistice in 1918, his works had been touring the capital in the most talked-about exhibitions of the day.

Explanation:

1. The Louvre's painting collection is one of the richest in the world, representing all periods of European art up to the Revolutions of 1848. Works painted after that date that the Louvre once housed were transferred to the Musée d'Orsay upon its opening in 1986.

2. The museum closed in 1796 because of structural problems with the building. Napoleon reopened the museum and expanded the collection in 1801, and the museum was renamed Musée Napoléon
