A person with a fixed mentality believes that the qualities of an individual are innate, that is, they are already born with that individual in a strong and efficient way, being fixed, immutable qualities that do not need commitment or hard work to be acquired. In other words, we can say that a person with this mindset thinks that everything should be easy and you shouldn't try too hard to get things done if you are "smart".
He wrote this story to inform the readers of the hardships that the settlers went through in order to reach the new land but they pushed through and stayed strong.
