In the story "When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine," we learn about Lilias. She is an Indian girl. For a short period of time, her family welcomes a Pakistani professor called Mr. Pirzada. Mr. Pirzada is kind and friendly to her, and the two become very close.

Lilias becomes more interested in the war because she met Mr. Pirzada. This allows her to put a face to the news. Moreover, Mr. Pirzada's family is still in Pakistan, and this worries him and her greatly. This deeper interest represents a change in Lilias way of thinking. It shows that the girl is becoming more understanding and empathetic. It also shows that Lilias is becoming more mature.
