For starters, many Panamanians believed that when the US helped them gain independence they were only doing it to profit themselves and to colonize them for them selves... other things include controversy and so on...
Well the first English settlement was really Roanoke, however it was not successful. The first successful one would be the new Virginia colony, later known as Jamestown;)
