Upon hearing this Leonidas ordered a full retreat while he and a rear guard of around 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, 400 Thespians and an odd assortment of more local troops stayed to allow the rest of the force to retreat and warn the rest of Greece of the Persian's advance. The Battle of Thermopylae ended in the death of King Leonidas and his rear guard as well as a significant blow to the Persians numbers and moral. It also galvanized the rest of Greece to victory.
