Jamestown, founded in Virginia in 1607, was the first lasting settlement. The harsh relationship with the Powhatan Indians, in addition to the unknown weather, the lack of food and drinkable water, as well as a lengthened drought, led to disease and death among the colonists. Furthermore, they didn´t have enough workers and experienced farmers.

In Massachusetts, the Pilgrims founded Plymouth in 1620. They did have experience doing hard work and being cooperative with each other, but they also endured hunger, disease, and environmental difficulties.
