North Carolina second constitution was made to bring the states in line with the union ideals after the civil was. North Carolina had fought alongside the confederate to preserve the slavery institution and to seceded, and their defeat automatically implied they had to live to the ideals of a slave free state.

The merchants were the ones who were willing to travel short and long distance to conduct trade and create economic expansion.
